The building was designed on behalf of the central administration of the AOK Berlin by the architect Albert Gottheiner (1878–1947) and opened in 1933 as an administration building. In the years after the Second World War, the building was used as a SED party university. The party university was an official state university with an entry in the university register of the GDR. In 2008, the architects Annette Axthelm and Henner Rolvien received the order for the redesign and conversion for high-quality living and formulate a contemporary architectural statement with the design of the METROPOL PARK called today. Historical and modern elements blend harmoniously into a new unity - a livable and lovable new home.
The multi-storey steel skeleton structure in the style of Expressionism is kept in dark, hard fire-typical red clinker bricks. The building ensemble is dominated by the elongated part of the building on Rungestrasse, a central building with a stately entrance portal and two rear wing buildings that flanked a large covered counter hall on the courtyard side. The western part of the building, located in the direction of Wassergasse, is a two-storey building, which was upgraded as part of the renovation work. The decorative pillars up to the fifth floor with six terracotta figures on the pillar templates as well as a plastic surface design of the clinker cladding are eye-catchers and at the same time an architectural loosening of the clinker main facade. The sculptures were done by Anton Lechtner.
